What is Alimta 100 mg Injection ?

Alimta 100 mg manufactured by Eli Lilly contains “Pemetrexed” as active ingredient. This medication comes as a solution that is injected into a vein (intravenous). It is administered under the supervision of a qualified physician experienced in the use of antineoplastic therapy. Do not share Alimta with others for whom it was not prescribed.

When is Alimta 100 mg Injection prescribed ?

Alimta (Pemetrexed) is used with another anti-cancer medicine to treat malignant pleural mesothelioma (A tumour of the tissue that lines the lungs, stomach, heart and other organs). It is also indicated to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

How Does Alimta (Pemetrexed) Injection Work ?

Pemetrexed belongs to a class of drugs known as antifolates. It interferes with cell metabolic processes that are dependent on folate and are required for cell replication. Premetrexed inhibits three enzymes that are required for purine and pyrimidine synthesis. These three enzymes are thymidylate synthase (TS), dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), and glycinamide ribonucleotide formyl transferase (GARFT). When Premetrexed inhibits the formation of precursor purine and pyrimidine nucleotides, it prevents the formation of DNA and RNA required for growth and survival of both cancer and normal cells.
