What is Zejula?

Zejula is used as a “maintenance” treatment to keep certain types of cancer from coming back. This includes cancers of the ovary, fallopian tube, or peritoneum (the membrane that lines the inside of your abdomen and covers some of your internal organs).

Zejula is given after you have received chemotherapy (with cisplatin, oxaliplatin, carboplatin, or similar) and your cancer has responded to that medicine.

Important information

You should not use Zejula if you are pregnant. Avoid pregnancy for at least 6 months after you stop using this medicine.

You should not breast-feed while using Zejula and for at least 1 month after your last dose.

Before taking this medicine

You should not use Zejula if you are allergic to niraparib.

To make sure this medicine is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

  • heart disease;
  • high blood pressure; or
  • liver or kidney disease.

Do not use Zejula if you are pregnant. It could harm the unborn baby or cause a miscarriage. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy while you are using Zejula and for at least 6 months after your last dose.

You may need to have a negative pregnancy test before starting this treatment.

This medicine may affect fertility (the ability to have children) in men. Talk with your doctor about your individual risk.

It is not known whether niraparib passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while using Zejula and for at least 1 month after your last dose.

How should I take Zejula?

Take Zejula exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

You should start taking Zejula no longer than 8 weeks after your most recent chemotherapy treatment with a platinum medicine (cisplatin, oxaliplatin, carboplatin).

You may take this medicine with or without food. Take the medicine at the same time each day.

Zejula is usually taken once a day until your body no longer responds to the medication.

Zejula may be taken at bedtime it upsets your stomach.

Do not crush, chew, break, or open a capsule. Swallow the capsule whole.

Niraparib can lower blood cells that help your body fight infections and help your blood to clot. Your blood will need to be tested often. Your cancer treatments may be delayed based on the results of these tests.

Your blood pressure and heart rate will also need to be checked often.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Follow the following prescription medicine precautions :

Receiving Zejula while pregnant may indirectly harm the baby by causing side effects in the woman. Take proper medical help in case you are pregnant, may be pregnant or planning to become pregnant in the near future. Health care providers may suggest inducing labor early to protect the baby from cancer treatment.
You should not be taken Zejula, if you are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed. This is because the drugs could be passed to your baby through breast milk. As Zejula may cause serious side effects in a breast-fed baby, talk to your doctor about whether you should continue breast-feeding.
Your doctor will do regular blood tests to check for side effects of Zejula. It is also important to check your levels of blood cells and other substances in the blood.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Zejula, any other medications, or any of the ingredients in this cancer medicine. This medication is not recommended for use in patients with a known allergy to Zejula.
If you take Zejula, you must stop drinking alcohol. This is one of the ways to prevent this disease from getting worse. If you are dependent on alcohol and want to stop drinking, your doctor can recommend a therapy that’s tailored for your needs.
If you use other prescription drugs or over the counter products at the same time, the effects of this cancer medicine may change. Tell your doctor about all the drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are using, so that your pharmacist can help you prevent or manage drug interactions.
More than 80% of patients occasionally miss a dose of their medication. Missing a dose of Zejula can upset your treatment plan. If you miss a dose, contact your health care provider or pharmacist immediately to establish a new dosing schedule. Be careful not to take doses too close together because you might get side effects. Don’t double your next dose to “make up” for the one you missed.
After the expiry date, medicines may not be safe or lose some or all of their effectiveness. You should not take Zejula after their expiry date. If you’ve had a medicine for a while, check the expiry date before using it. If it has expired or is damaged, return it to your pharmacist for disposal.
During your treatment with Zejula, it is very important for your doctor to know about your medical history if you have Kidney problems, hepatitis B, liver problems, HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), triglycerides, diabetes or other health problems.
